1 March 2011 | Tennis ACT

Tennis ACT launched ‘Tennis in Schools Month’ today, which will provide a free tennis taster session to over 2,000 ACT primary school students during March.

The new initiative will see qualified and certified coaches from the local tennis community demonstrating the official Tennis Australia kids starter program, MLC Tennis Hot Shots at no charge to 20 schools throughout the Territory.

MLC Tennis Hot Shots utilising modified equipment, creates a fun and easier environment for children to learn to play tennis. The lessons focus on game play and teaching children to learn through playing the sport.

“The MLC Tennis Hot Shots program has been highly successful with over 144,000 children participating in the program nationally year to date,” Tennis ACT chief executive officer Ross Triffitt explained.

“In the ACT we want to create closer links between schools and their local community tennis clubs and by funding qualified coaches from our affiliated clubs to teach in their local schools we can guarantee first class tuition, give children a taste of what tennis is like and for the interested players, we can offer follow up programs at their nearest club.”

In addition to the free lessons in schools, Tennis ACT will be offering tennis scholarships to children who are recognized through the talent identification program.

These scholarships include a free racquet and term squad coaching classes with their local coach.

“The talent identification program is a great opportunity for young budding athletes who may dream of one day winning a Grand Slam tournament” Triffitt said.

“They will be provided with equipment, training and scholarships that will set them up with the perfect start to be the next Pat Rafter or Sam Stosur.’
