On Monday 27th June, Todd Larkham, Tennis ACT High Performance Coach and Joe Kubizniak, Coach Development Coordinator from Tennis NSW ran a workshop for Talent Stars Coaches.
Tennis ACT, Tennis Australia and the private ACT tennis coaches who deliver the ‘Hot Shots’ program have joined together to develop and jointly subsidise the Talent Stars Program.
The participants are 5-7yr olds who currently train and play on the ‘Red Court’, the smallest court of the three which make up the Hot Shots Program. They have been identified as possessing the skills and qualities at this young age to potentially progress to an elite level in the future. These kids attended the Talent Stars Development Day on Thursday 30th of June.
The program is a combination of training and competition being held both at the private clubs and once a term here at the National Sports Club in Lyneham for a challenge event.
The program aims are
– To teach the kids the BASIC TECHNICAL fundamentals of tennis
– To teach kids the BASIC TACTICAL fundamentals of tennis
– To instil a PASSION for tennis in the kids
– To assist the kids to further develop their FUNDAMENTAL PERCEPTUAL MOTOR SKILLS and their general athleticism
– For the kids to have FUN through training and COMPETITION
– To teach kids what SPORTSMANSHIP means
– To educate PARENTS on tennis and the elite development pathway in Australia
The workshop was a huge success. Todd started the day with a presentation on his coaching philosophy for 10yrs + and what he expects skill wise at this age. The coaches then got on court to share ideas, techniques and their philosophies, encouraging coaches to work together to deliver the program with the same foundation.
The program is the very 1st step in the Tennis Australia and Tennis ACT pathway for the development of elite juniors.
