If our Maxim Talent Stars needed any motivation, then they don’t need to look any further than Canberra Velocity’s Nick Kyrgios.

Kyrgios, a dual Grand Slam junior doubles champion, will be one of Canberra Velocity team to join them for a hit at the National Sports Club, Lyneham, on Friday.

The world No.4 junior says he is looking forward to having the opportunity to inspire some of Canberra’s rising tennis players.

“I’m looking forward to meeting the kids and having a hit with them,” Kyrgios says. “Hopefully I can give them some advice and they can see that even if they are from Canberra they can do well on the world stage.”

During the Maxim Talent Stars Red Ball session, the juniors will be assessed by National Academy coach Todd Larkham.

The Maxim Talent Stars Red Ball Program has made tennis a lot easier to learn and play at a young age. The program follows the MLC Tennis Hot Shots Red Ball guidelines for training and competition. It uses modified equipment for children, appropriate to their developmental needs, allowing them to play like the professionals – complete with serves, rallies and net play.

These Maxim Talent Stars, aged between five and eight, have been identified by their club coach as having the potential to one day play at an elite level.

The Maxim scholarship allows qualified MLC Tennis Hot Shots coaches from Canberra tennis clubs to offer scholarships which provide free squad coaching for one hour per week for five weeks each term.

At the end of each term these scholarship holders are assessed by Larkham in a bid to accelerate their tennis development.

Larkham will provide feedback about the children’s progression to both coaches and parents.

“I give them a few tips, but the main objective is to instil a passion for tennis in them early,” Larkham says.

“Hopefully, seeing Nick and hearing about his success will spur them on.”
