Victoria Azarenka has, but Andy Murray hasn’t. If you were in the crowd at the Asia-Pacific Tennis League at the National Sports Club at Lyneham yesterday you could have – held the Australian Open trophies aloft, that is.

The trophies, officially known as the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup and the Norman Brookes Challenge Cup, were compulsive viewing for the 200-strong crowd at Canberra Velocity’s first tie of the weekend.

The opportunity was too good to resist to get your hands on the silverware that the eventual 2013 women’s and men’s champions will actually take home.

The tie against the National Academy NSW AUStars yesterday had a carnival atmosphere – complete with a DJ, jumping castle and face painter.

The ACT Brumbies assistant coach Stephen Larkham, flyhalf Zack Holmes and prop Scott Sio checked out the silverware, too,  before swapping a rugby ball for a tennis racquet and trying their luck on the court.

They took on each other and the crowd, and everyone was a winner.

Today’s action at Lyneham returns to the court with local juniors vying for the ACT Resident Championships from 8am, along with the MLC Tennis HotShots and a cardio tennis demonstration from noon.

Our Canberra Velocity team will then take to the court against the Hunter Raworth Tigers (men) and NSTA Avengers (women) from 2pm.

Entry is free. See you there.
