Canberra Velocity begins its quest for the inaugural Asia-Pacific Tennis League title against the highly fancied WA Giants at Melbourne Park on Tuesday.

Canberra’s Alison Bai and Ashley Keir will spearhead the Velocity team alongside Tyra Calderwood, Nicole Hoynaski, Tarlina Tipungwuti and Imogen Clews.

Velocity faces a strong Giants team, which boasts 2008 Australian Open girls’ singles finalist and former world number 132 Jessica Moore.

Moore, currently ranked 409, is the standout in the Western Australian team that includes Marisa Gianotti, Astra Sharma, Katie O’Shae, and recently named Fed Cup captain Alicia Molik.

Team manager Todd Larkham says the fourth seeded Velocity team is expecting a tough opener.

“It’s a very evenly matched tie,” Larkham says.

“It will probably come down to a few points and our girls will need to be ready for a tough match.”

However Larkham says the strength of the Velocity team is its depth from positions one to four.

“We have a strong, even team, particularly with Tyra and Nicole at three and four.

All the girls are capable of playing a high level and winning in any position.”

The quarter-final match begins on Tuesday.
