From 7-9 September, the 2013 Canberra Junior Open was held at the National Sports Club in Lyneham. This Bronze level junior tournament, gave players aged 10-16 from the ACT and interstate a chance to compete against each other whilst trying to achieve Australian Ranking points.
Up and coming ACT 12/u player Annerly Poulos played a thrilling singles final against Kelly Gilmour (NSW). Annerly put up a good fight which she unfortunately ended up losing 6-2, 7-6. Poulos has been in the spotlight lately as one of ACT’s home grown tennis stars successfully competing in tournaments around Australia. “She (Annerly) played really well at this tournament. It was really good to make another final. With a really close match that could have gone either way” said Coach Todd Larkham. Annerley is currently training 12 hours a week preparing to compete for the 12 and Under National’s Title to be held in Sydney held in two weeks time.
Congratulations go to ACT juniors Yuki Okamoto who won his singles and double match with partner Jake Okines, Stephanie Pang (doubles), Vishal Ganeshan (singles and doubles) and Nicholas Bisa (doubles) who came out victorious and won their finals matches. All draws and results can be found here*.
Special thanks go to the canteen volunteers, coaches and family who attended the tournament and supported the players. Thanks must also go to all the competitors who played excellent matches showing great sportsmanship on and off court.
Well done to all the juniors who competed.
The next tournament to be held at the National Sports Club is the Capital Open running from 20-22 September. For more information about the Capital Open click here or visit our Facebook website.
