31 October 2013 | Tennis ACT

Congratulations to all the ACT players who competed in the 12/U and 14/U Nationals  in Sydney in October. It’s a great effort just to gain a high enough ranking to gain entry into a Nationals and requires many good results in many other tournaments throughout the year. These players incuded Annerly Poulos, Tallulah Farrow, Chorlida Kang, Dimi Morogiannis, Zac Donaldson and Sam Bisa.

The standout performer was Dimi Morogiannis, who recorded his best ever result in a National title by finishing in 6th  position. Dimi won all 3 matches in the group stage and defeated 14/U National Claycourt champion Mayez Elrich 7/6 in the third set to clinch his spot in the quarter-finals. Dimi lost his quarters to No.1 seed Alex De Minaur and then finished 6th in the 5-8 playoff.

Annerly Poulos also put in a great performance by finishing in 10th place in the 12/U Nationals. Annerly was the youngest player in the top 10 and defeated several older players along the way. Annerly then continued her good form after the Nationals by winning the 14/U Silver event in Wollongong and pulling ahead in the rankings to be the clear No.1 in Australia in her birth year.

Jake Eames made a successful return to competitive tennis this month after a couple of years off with injury, by reaching the final of the Sydney Platinum event. The past 2 years Jake has done many hours of coaching for Champion Team Tennis at the National Sports Club and has helped many young ACT juniors improve their game. Jake defeated several higher ranked players including former Australian Open Junior Champion Nick Lindahl. Jake will represent the Canberra Velocity in the upcoming Asia-Pacific Tennis League. You can see Jake in action along with youngest player ranked inside the mens top 200, ACT’s Nick Kyrgios, at the ATL home ties which will be held at North Woden Tennis Club on Nov 16 and 17. Please come along and support our best ACT players!!

In the ACT White AMT held at the National Sports Club, Lyneham, local player James Frawley continued his winning ways by taking out the mens singles. This is the 4th straight White AMT event James has won in Canberra in the past 2 years. James had an excellent junior career, reaching a world junior ranking of 42 in 2012 and was ranked as high as No.3 in Australia in the 18/U ranks. James is currently studying at the Uni of Canberra but is considering having a crack at pro tennis in the near future.

In the doubles the local team of Jake Okines and Yuki Okamoto continued their solid run of form by reaching the Mens doubles final whilst local player Sanjana Bidarkal reached the final of the womens singles.
