Canberra Velocity lost its opening Asia-Pacific Tennis League match against the Stanmore Wyverns today four rubbers to two.

In the first-to-four games format, local product Alison Bai lost a tense opening singles match against Julia Moriarty 1-4, 4-3 (5-3), 2-4, while Nicole Hoynaski lost the first set in a tiebreak against Ange Svinos before losing 3-4 (5-3), 1-4.

Tyra Calderwood dominated her match against Pamela Boyanov, winning 4-1, 4-2, while late replacement Maria Vais lost to Nicole Kriz 0-4, 0-4.

 Vais was called in to play for Velocity’s Ashley Keir, who was playing the Platinum AMT final in Gosford this morning. Keir was victorious in that event, beating Karis Ryan 4-6, 7-5, 6-4.

 In the doubles, Bai and Hoynaski split sets with Svinos and Boyanov before losing a Super tiebreak (2-10), while Calderwood won her second match of the day when she teamed with Vais to beat Moriarty and Kriz 4-2, 1-4, (10-7).

Velocity’s men’s team, who had a first round bye, open their account against Sydney Uni Lions in Sydney on Friday, November 8.
