Canberra Velocity men’s team has made a winning start to their Asia-Pacific Tennis League campaign in Sydney tonight, beating Sydney Uni Lions four rubbers to two.

AIS scholarship holder Alex Bolt edged out Dane Propoggia, ranked 363 in the world, 4-3 (5-0), 1-4, 4-2 and Canberra baseliner Jake Eames defeated former professional Jurek Stasiak, 4-3 (5-1), 4-2.

Velocity’s James Frawley fought hard against Kris Balakrishnan, before eventually losing 1-4, 4-3 (5-1), 3-4 (3-5), while Robert Howe defeated Uni’s Gavin Levy 4-2, 4-3 (5-2),

In the doubles, Bolt and Eames dropped just three games against Propoggia and Stasiak, winning 4-2, 4-1, while Frawley and Howe lost in a super-tiebreak against Balakrishnan-Power 4-3 (5-2), 3-4(3-5), (5-10).

Team coach Alun Jones was impressed with the team’s victory.

“The boys played really well,” Jones said. “They were a really strong team and it was a match we could have lost.”

Canberra Velocity will play its first home ties at the North Woden Tennis Club on Saturday, November 16 and Sunday, November 17.

On Saturday, Velocity’s men team will meet Stanmore Wyverns, headlined by former world No.1 junior Todd Reid. On Sunday, they meet Macquarie Uni Warriors, led by David Barclay, Marious Zelba and Shoki Hachiya.

Velocity’s women’s team will play City Lizards (Lucie Kriegsmannova, Jess Engels and Lejla Husic) on the Saturday, and Sydney Uni Lions, consisting of Hayley Ericksen, Bianca Chidrawi and Rachel Assef, on Sunday.
