Women's team

Canberra Velocity Women remain undefeated after 3 rounds in their quest for back to back NSW/ACT Conference titles. Velocity sit on top of the table after defeating Sydney University Lions 4-2 on Sunday. The Men’s team are still looking for their first win of the season after going down 5-1 to league front runners the Manly Waves.

The Velocity Women took on Sydney University at home on the natural grass courts. Alison Bai again struck first for Velocity maintaining her unbeaten run at the number 1 position with a convincing with over Martina Hudaly. Rebecca Stewart then levelled the tie defeating Imogen Clews in 2 tiebreak sets. Maria Vais then put Velocity up 2-1, with a dominate performance against Anne-Marie Medcalf. In the only 3 set singles match of the day, Tyra Calderwood battled hard against Hayley Erickson to prevail 4-2 in the 3rd set.

Bai and Calderwood then joined forces to clinch the tie with a solid win over Hudaly and Erickson, only dropping 3 games. Clews and Vais got off to a strong start taking the first set 4-0, however Stewart and Bree Calderwood fought back to take the second and clinch the match supertiebreak to get another win for the Lions.

The Women are sitting on top of the ladder with UTS Lizards close behind in second place. The Women will look to clinch their finals berth this weekend at home as they once again take on the Sydney University Lions and South East Smashers.

The Velocity Men headed to Manly to take on title favourites the Manly Waves. The Waves got off to a quick start with Matt Barton (ATP 521) proving too strong for Jake Okines. Velocity then hit straight back with Jake Eames having an impressive straight sets win over Matt Reid who has an ATP ranking of 265. The Waves Jordan Thompson (ATP 274) then handed James Frawley his first singles loss of the season to put Manly up 2-1. Jay Andrijic then made it 3-1 with a straight sets win over Alun Jones.

In the doubles, Jones and Eames combined to take on Reid and Barton in a tightly contested affair which saw both sets decided by sudden death points going the way of the Waves. Andrijic and Thompson then rounded out the win for the Waves with a 4-1, 4-1 defeat of Robert Howe and Frawley.

The Men’s team now face an uphill battle to make the finals taking on the first place Waves, and second place Sydney University Lions this weekend in Canberra.

Canberra Velocity Men’s and Women’s teams will play at 1pm Saturday 6th and 10am Sunday 7th December in the final two regular season matches at Canberra Tennis Centre, Lyneham.
