Top seed John Millman (Qld) and third seed Jordan Thompson (NSW) have both fallen in straight sets today at the Canberra Tennis International.

Millman, the World No. 74, struggled to get going against American Marcos Giron, dropping the first set and quickly going down a break in the second. He fought back to level the second set 4-4 but couldn’t hold the momentum, as Giron broke again and served out the match 6-4 6-4.

Czech 20-year-old Robin Stanek was in red hot form with a dominant victory over Thompson. The heavy hitting World No. 376 has jumped almost 300 world ranking spots in the past month and was too much for the tournament third seed, winning 6-0 6-2 in just over 40 minutes.

Luke Saville (SA) is the only seed remaining in the top half of the draw, after sixth seed Connor Smith (USA) also fell to German qualifier Sebastian Fanselow in a third set tiebreak.

It was better news for the Australian women, with wildcards Olivia Tjadramulia (Qld) and Maddison Inglis (WA), Arina Rodionova (Vic), Priscilla Hon (Qld) and qualifier Destanee Aiava (Vic) all recording strong wins.

Local hope Alison Bai couldn’t continue the trend however, as she went down 6-4 6-4 in a tight two sets to second seed Eri Hozumi (JPN). Bai stays alive in the doubles and will be back on court for a place in the semifinals tomorrow.

All women’s singles second round matches and doubles quarterfinals will be played tomorrow, while the men’s action will be highlighted by second seed Matthew Ebden (WA) against fellow Aussie Ben Mitchell (Qld) and fourth seed Brydan Klein (GBR) who faces New South Welshman Matt Reid.

Final matches are still underway today, with Canberra’s James Frawley and Harry Bourchier (Tas) on court in the doubles.

Entry to the Canberra Tennis Centre is free with play starting at 10am on Thursday.
