The upsets continued at the Canberra Tennis International today, as second seed Matthew Ebden (WA) and fourth seed Brydan Klein (GBR) saw their singles hopes end.

Klein was the first to be knocked out this morning when he ran into an in-form Matt Reid (NSW). Reid, one of four Australians through to the quarterfinals, eased through in windy conditions, winning 6-2 6-4.

Eighth seed Alex Bolt (SA) survived a first set tiebreak against Matt Barton (NSW) to make it through, before Ebden fell in a rain-disrupted three setter to leave Luke Saville (SA) as the highest remaining seed.

The West Australian started well against fellow Aussie Ben Mitchell (Qld), taking the first set 7-6(6), before Mitchell stormed back to take the second and third sets 6-4 6-2.

At least one Australian is guaranteed a spot in the semifinals, with Mitchell to face Bolt in tomorrow’s fourth quarterfinal.

In the women’s event, Kimberly Birrell (Qld) continued her run beating eight seed So-Ra Lee (KOR) 6-4 7-5 to reach her second consecutive Pro Tour quarterfinal. Arina Rodionova (Vic) topped 15-year-old qualifier Destanee Aiava (Vic) 7-6(4) 6-2 to join Birrell in the quarters, while Priscilla Hon (Qld) was locked in a third set against American Jennifer Elie for the final spot.

In the women’s doubles, local hope Alison Bai and Ling Zhang (HKG) came back from a break down in both sets to advance to the semifinals with a 6-4 6-3 win over third seeds Aayaka Okuno (JPN) and Cindy Burger (NED).

Entry to the Canberra Tennis Centre is free with play starting at 10am on Friday.
