3 December 2015 | Todd Larkham

Annerly Poulos (12) has continued her outstanding run of singles victories over the past 3 months. Annerly went undefeated in 37 singles matches, including the NSW State 14/u Championships, the Bruce Cup, 2 x White AMT events, a Bronze AMT and a victory over AR ranked 105 Martina Hudaly in the Asia Pacific Tennis League (ATL). Annerly run finally come to an end, after going down to Gabriella Da Silva-Fick in the ATL.

Whilst many of our juniors are now preparing for the December showdown which includes the 12/u, 14/u, 16/u and  18/u National titles and 12/u and 14/u National Teams events, for most pro players it is time to enjoy some rest at home and do a training block in preparation for the Australian summer of tennis including the Australian Open. ACT’s highest ranked pro player, Nick Kyrgios, enjoyed his best season ever on tour in 2015 and has finished the year at a career high year end ranking of 30. Highlights included reaching the quarter-finals of the Australian  Open, the 4th round of Wimbledon and making his first tour final on the clay in Estoril. He also defeated World No.2 and the greatest player of all time, Roger Federer, in the Madrid Masters and then backed that up with wins over Milos Raonic (World No.8) and Stan Wawrinka (World No.4). You may see Nick on the practice courts at Lyneham or around town during December as he prepares  for the Hopman Cup and Australian Open in January.

The ACT Bruce Cup team had one of there best performances for several years at the ACT Primary Schools Championships held in Hobart in October. The combined boys and girls team finished 6th ahead of Tasmania and NT, and were highly competitive against all the larger States including NSW and Victoria. Well done to all the kids who participated and we hope to see many of you back in the team in 2016!

Some breakthrough results were also achieved for ACT junior players at the Wagga Wagga Junior Open. Lejla Hajdar took out the 12/u girls singles, whilst Jack Lyons defeated fellow Canberran Sam Bisa to win the 14/u boys singles. Dominic Ferraris also made his way through to the final of the 12/u boys singles by defeating the No.1 seed along the way.

The Canberra Velocity mens and womens teams have also been in action the past month.  Congratulations to the Women’s team who finished in 1st place in Pool B of the North Conference.  They now travel to Queensland to face the Beenleigh Blaze for a place in the North Conference final.  The men’s team finished in 3rd position in the pool and did not qualify for the finals.
