Canberra Velocity has destroyed the Beenleigh Blaze in the semifinals of the North Conference in the Asia-Pacific Tennis League. Velocity thumped the Blaze 6-0, and will play the Brisbane Sharks in Sunday’s final. The win has also secured Velocity a place in the ATL Playoffs to be held in Melbourne in January.
Velocity came out of the blocks quickly, with Alison Bai defeating Aleksa Cveticanin 4-0, 4-2 at the top spot. Tyra Calderwood then made it 2-0 after defeating Lara Tupper, while Kaitlin Staines only dropped 2 games against Chloe Lowe. The Blaze’s Chantal Jamieson took the first set against Ashley Keir, however Keir hit back, winning 4-1, 4-0 to clinch the win for Velocity.
With the victory locked in, the women continued their impressive form with Keir and Calderwood winning in straight sets, while Alexandra Nancarrow and Bai won in 3.
In Sunday’s final, Velocity will face the Brisbane Sharks who defeated the Western Sydney Warriors. The Sharks feature WTA ranked players Priscilla Hon, Naikitha Bains, Lizette Cabrera and Ashling Sumner and are currently undefeated. By winning tonight, both Velocity and Sharks have booked a spot to the ATL playoffs in January.
In speaking about the victory, team manager and player Nancarrow said “The team is feeling confident and pumped after a solid win tonight. We are also very excited to have the opportunity to compete in Melbourne”.
The North Conference final will take place on Sunday 6 December at 1pm (AEST) at the Queensland Tennis Centre.
