Action got under way today at the Canberra $75K ATP Challenger at the Canberra Tennis Centre. A number of Australian’s progressed to the final round of qualifying, while local hope Dimitri Morogiannis, fell in the second round.

In the opening match of the day, Morogiannis took on Enrico Becuzzi from Italy. Morogiannis came out of the blocks quickly, taking the first set 6-1. He continued his good form in the second set, taking it 6-3 to record his first victory on the challenger tour. In the second round he faced, number 6 seed Jake Delaney (NSW). Delaney proved too strong for Morogiannis, taking the match 6-3, 6-1.

Several Australian’s progressed through to the final round of qualifying with Nathanael Consalvo (Qld) knocking out the number 3 seed, Konstantinos Economidis (GRE). Consalvo will now face 8 seed Daniel Nolan (Vic) who defeated Benard Nkomba (NSW) in straight sets. Queensland’s Blake Ellis is also through to the final round of qualifying after a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Sam Longhurst (SA). Top seed Sergey Betov (BLR), breezed through his opening match against Brian Tran (NSW), dropping just 4 games.

The main draw was released today and will feature some blockbuster first rounds. Second seed Santiago Giraldo (COL) will face world number 100 Dudi Sela (ISR) in the opening round, while Australia’s Matthew Ebden faces Daniel Gimeon-Traver (ESP), with only 7 spots separating the pair in the rankings. Top seed Paolo Lorenzi (ITA) will open his campaign against fellow Italian Stefano Napolitano

Qualifying will continue tomorrow from 10am with free entry into the Canberra Tennis Centre. Sunday’s order of play and draws can be found here.  Main draw is set to commence on Monday.
