Seven of the top eight seeds have made it through to the quarterfinals, while Australia’s last hopes in the tournament have all fallen. Players again battled tough conditions as temperatures soared to 38 degrees.

Fifth seed, Ivan Dodig (CRO) had a comfortable win over Spain’s Daniel Gimeno-Traver dropping just 5 games in the opening match of the day. Third and fourth seeds Daniel Munoz de la Nava (ESP) and Marcel Granollers (ESP) also had straight set victories. Munoz de la Nava defeated Xin Geo (CHN), while Granollers defeated Aussie Maverick Banes (Qld).

Top seed Paolo Lorenzi (ITA) looked in trouble early after going down a break, but recovered to take the match 7-5, 6-1. Sixth seed Diego Schwartzman (ARG) came through a tough match with qualifier Frank Moser (GER), to book his place in the quarterfinals.

Australia’s Max Purcell (NSW) put up an impressive fight against second seed and world number 70 Santiago Giraldo (COL). After losing the first set 6-2, Purcell bounced back to take the second in a tiebreak. But Giraldo’s experience shone through in the third, taking it 6-3. Andrew Whittingon (Vic) was a set and a break up in his match against Quentin Halys (FRA) but was unable to close out the second set. Halys eventually took the match 6-4 in the third.

Australian’s will feature in doubles semifinal action tomorrow with Banes and Jarryd Chaplin (NSW) facing Carsten Ball (Vic) and Moser. Pucell and Jake Delaney (NSW), are also through to the semifinals after upsetting number three seeds Sergy Betov (BLR) and Aliaksandr Bury (BLR) today.

Due to impending bad weather tomorrow’s play has been bought forward an hour with additional match courts in play to shorten tomorrow’s schedule. Quarter final action will kick off from 10am.

Thursday’s order of play and the draws can be found here. Entry into the Canberra Tennis is free with shade cover over seating on centre court.

The Canberra $75K ATP Challenger will be held at the Canberra Tennis Centre from 9-16 January, 2016.  The event is part of the Australian Pro Tour and will provide local and international players a lead-in to the Australian Open 2016.

The tournament was announced in November after the success of the Canberra International and as part of the Tennis ACT calendar of events secured through the redevelopment of the Canberra Tennis Centre.

The redeveloped Canberra Tennis Centre features 28 tennis courts – including synthetic grass, Italian clay and hardcourt surfaces – as well as four ANZ Tennis Hot Shots courts. The venue will also host back-to-back Pro Tour events in March 2016 to be contested on clay.
