Friday’s semifinals are set to feature some quality tennis, with four top 100 players to play for a place in the final of the Canberra $75K ATP Challenger. Top seed Paolo Lorenzi (ITA) will face fourth seed Marcel Granollers (ESP), while third seed Daniel Munoz de la Nava (ESP) will play fifth seed Ivan Dodig (CRO).

In today’s quarterfinal action, Lorenzi was able to comfortably take care of seventh seed Evgeny Donskoy (RUS). After winning the first set 6-4, Lorenzi cruised to victory in the second, breaking Donskoy three times to take it 6-1.

In the match of the day, Dodig faced second seed Santiago Giraldo (COL). Giraldo went up an early break, and served for the set 5-4 but was unable to close it out. Dodig broke back and forced a tiebreak, taking it 7-1. Dodig continued his momentum in the second set, breaking Giraldo twice to secure his place in the semifinals.

The other quarterfinals were both affected by retirements. Granollers took the first set against Quentin Hayls (FRA), before Hayls was forced to retire with heat exhaustion. Hayls had spent over 5 hours on court in his previous two matches in scorching temperatures. Munoz de la Nava also took the first set off sixth seed Diego Schwartzman (ARG) before Schwartzman was forced to retire with a hand injury.

In the doubles, Australian’s Maverick Banes (Qld) and Jarryd Chaplin (NSW) are through to the final after toppling fourth seeds Carsten Ball (Vic) and Frank Moser. In tomorrow’s doubles final they will face top seeds Mariusz Fyrstenberg (POL) and Santiago Gonzalez (MEX) after they beat the young Australian pairing of Jake Delaney (NSW) and Max Purcell (NSW).

Friday’s order of play and the draws can be found here. Entry into the Canberra Tennis is free with shade cover over seating on centre court. Play will commence at 11am.

The Canberra $75K ATP Challenger will be held at the Canberra Tennis Centre from 9-16 January, 2016.  The event is part of the Australian Pro Tour and will provide local and international players a lead-in to the Australian Open 2016.

The tournament was announced in November after the success of the Canberra International and as part of the Tennis ACT calendar of events secured through the redevelopment of the Canberra Tennis Centre.
The redeveloped Canberra Tennis Centre features 28 tennis courts – including synthetic grass, Italian clay and hardcourt surfaces – as well as four ANZ Tennis Hot Shots courts. The venue will also host back-to-back Pro Tour events in March 2016 to be contested on clay.
