Seeds have dominated day one of main draw at the ACT International #1, while Naiktha Bains (QLD) has won through to the second round.

Seeds two through six were all in action today and dominated their matches with all of them winning in straight sets. Sixth seed Erika Sema (JPN) got off to a quick start against Australia’s Storm Sanders (WA) taking the first set without dropping a game. Sanders fought back in the second, however Sema proved too strong taking the tiebreak 7-3. Third seed Ya-Hsuan Lee (TPE) defeated former top 100 player Anastasia Pivovarova (RUS), 7-5, 6-3, while second seed Jia-Jing Lu (CHN) beat Anna Bondar (HUN). Fourth seed Eri Hozumi (JPN) and fifth seed Sherazad Reix (FRA) also won through to the second round.

Australian wildcard Naiktha Bains recorded a strong victory over Chieh-Yu Hsu (TPE), who is ranked almost 200 places above Bains in the WTA rankings. Bains won a close first set 6-4, then dominated the second set to take it 6-2.

Ashleigh Barty (QLD) and Arina Rodionova (VIC) won their doubles match over Sally Peers (VIC) and Lizette Cabrera (QLD), while third seed Jess Moore (WA) and Tammi Patterson (VIC) lost in a supertiebreak.

Tomorrow’s singles action will see Canberra’s Alison Bai looking to cause an upset against top seed Miyu Kato (JPN). Fellow Canberran Ashley Keir, will then take on Australian qualifier Destanee Aiava (VIC).

Jaimee Fourlis (VIC), Sally Peers (VIC), Tammi Patterson (VIC), Olivia Tjandramulia (QLD), Jessica Moore (WA) and seventh seed Arina Rodionova (VIC) will all be in action tomorrow.

The ACT Claycourt International #1 and #2 will be held at the Canberra Tennis Centre from March 12-27. Each tournament will offer $25,000 in prizemoney and will be held on the recently redeveloped European clay courts.

The tournaments were announced in May, 2015 as part of the Tennis ACT calendar of events secured through the redevelopment of the Canberra Tennis Centre.

The redeveloped Canberra Tennis Centre features 28 tennis courts – including synthetic grass, Italian clay and hardcourt surfaces – as well as four ANZ Tennis Hot Shots courts.
