Jessica Moore (WA) has won a marathon battle with Ayaka Okuno (JPN) lasting almost four hours at the ACT Claycourt International #2. In a great day for the Australian’s, four players progressed through to the second round.
There were no breaks of serve in the first set, as Moore and Okuno went into a tiebreak. Moore was able to secure the set, taking the tiebreak 8-6. After breaking at 4-4 in the second set, Moore served for the match, but Okuno rattled off the next three games to send the match into a deciding set. Things were not looking good for Moore as she went down 4-1 in the third, but she fought back to level at 4-4. At 5-5, Moore secured the break and served out the match to win in 3 hours and 48 minutes.
Arina Rodionova (VIC) proved too good for Canberra’s Alison Bai, winning the match 6-4, 6-1. Wildcard Lizette Cabrera (QLD) pulled off the biggest upset of the day, defeating number six seed Erika Sema (JPN) in straight sets. Storm Sanders (WA) also won through, after defeating Katy Dunne (GBR) who made the quarterfinals at last week’s event. Number eight seed Varatchaya Wongteanchai (THA) was too strong for Gabriella Da Silva Fick (NSW), while number three seed Ya-Hsuan Lee (TPE) also won through.
In doubles, Bai rebounded to record a comfortable win with Jia-Jing Lu (CHN), winning 6-2, 6-1 over Sema and Angelina Gabueva (RUS). Fellow Canberran Kaitlin Staines combined with Kaylee McPhee (QLD) to defeat Da Silva Fick and Alexandra Bozovic (NSW) in a match tiebreak to move through to the quarter finals.
Jaimee Fourlis (VIC), Destanee Aiava (VIC), Alexandra Bozovic, Tammi Patterson (VIC), and Olivia Tjandramulia (QLD) will be looking to add to the number of Australia’s in the second round when they play their first round singles tomorrow. Quarterfinal doubles matches will also be played tomorrow.
Main draw singles and doubles will be played on Wednesday from 10am with free entry into the Canberra Tennis Centre.
