Aussie teenagers Olivia Tjandramulia (QLD) and Destanee Aiava (VIC) have both continued their strong form, by winning through to the second round at the ACT Claycourt International #2. While in doubles action, Canberra’s Kaitlin Staines and Kaylah McPhee (QLD) have progressed through to the semifinals.
Tjandramulia and Aiava who both received special exemptions into main draw after their performances last week, had contrasting matches today. Tjandramulia proved too strong for wildcard Alexandra Bozovic (NSW) winning the match 6-2, 6-2. Aiava was forced to dig deep in her first round encounter against qualifier Lisa Whybourn (GBR). After winning the first 6-3, Aiava dropped the second 7-5. With Aiava serving at 5-4, she rattled off an impressive twelve points in a row, to close out the match 7-5.
The top two seed Miyu Kato (JPN) and Jia-Jing Lu (CHN) cruised through their opening matches, however in the upset of the day last week’s champion Eri Hozumi (JPN) was beaten by Ana Vrljic (CRO). Hozumi had defeated Vrljic in straight sets last week in the opening round and looked set to do the same leading 5-2 in the third. Hozumi let match points slip, with Vrljic staging a courageous comeback winning five straight games to close out the match 7-5. Fifth seed Sherazad Reix (FRA) also fell, going down to qualifier Anna Bondar (HUN) 7-6 in the third set.
Jaimee Fourlis (VIC) lost a tight battle to Pemra Ozgen (TUR) while Tammi Patterson (VIC) had to retire from her first round encounter due to injury after losing the first set. She was also forced to pull out of doubles, handing Ashleigh Barty (QLD) and Arina Rodionova a place in the semifinals.
Staines and McPhee have progressed through to their first Pro Tour semifinal after defeating qualifiers Vivian Heisen (GER) and Katharina Lehnert (PHI). The Aussies won the first set 6-4, before dropping the second 6-3. Staines and McPhee edged out the qualifiers 10-8 in the match tiebreak to move through to the semifinals. They will face either top seeds Hozumi and Kato after they defeated fellow Canberran Alison Bai and Lu in the quarterfinals.
Second round singles and doubles semifinals will be played on Thursday from 10am with free entry into the Canberra Tennis Centre.
