Top seed Miyu Kato (JPN) and qualifier Anna Bondar (HUN) will play for the singles title at the ACT Claycourt International #2 on Sunday at the Canberra Tennis Centre.
In today’s semifinal, Kato defeated third seed Ya-Hsuan Lee (TPE) in a tight two set match. With scores locked at 4-4 in the first, Kato secured the first break of the match then served out the set 6-4. Lee responded to jump out to a 5-2 lead in the second. However, the top seed fought back to level the scores and send it into a tiebreak. Kato pulled away, winning the tiebreak 7-3 to move through to the final.
Kato is currently sitting at a career high ranking of WTA 165 and will be looking to add to her two career ITF titles.
In the other semifinal, Bondar was far too strong for eight seed Varatchaya Wongteanchai (THA). Wongteanchai only managed to win one game, as Bondar blew her off the court 6-1, 6-0.
Bondar who came through qualifying has been the giant killer of the tournament. On route to the final she has taken out the number two, five, and eight seeds. Currently ranked 359 in the WTA rankings, Bondar has six $10,000 ITF titles to her name. A win tomorrow would be the biggest title of her career.
The singles final will be played on Sunday at 11am with free entry into the Canberra Tennis Centre.
