On Tuesday 29th March 2016, the Evonne Goolagong Foundation held their Free Indigenous Tennis Come and Try Day at the Melba Tennis Centre. Fifty young students aged from five to fifteen from different schools across Canberra attended the event. The day was filled with encouragement, fun and overall excitement for the young indigenous kids to enjoy the sport of tennis.
The indigenous Come and Try Day is supported by the Australian Government which aims to provide the youth with an opportunity to experience the game of tennis. The day was part of the nation-wide Dream, Believe, Learn, Achieve initiative which promotes and helps provide better health and education opportunities for young indigenous Australians.
Evonne Goolagong Cawley spoke to the youth today about the importance of staying in school and having the motivation to follow your dreams.
“By staying in school, the children are provided with quality education which will be helpful for chasing their dreams in the future. The children need to find their dream and once they have it, they can achieve it!”
“All of our coaches here today were part of our 2005 program in which they have developed their skills. This is an example of the success of our program and helping the indigenous community achieve their goals”.
The Tennis Come and Try day also allows the Foundation to find new talent and provide them with possible new equipment and free coaching to further their tennis development. The program also encourages young indigenous people to get involved with playing tennis and support young indigenous people to improve their potential and play at the elite level.
