The 2016 ACT Open Platinum AMT was held last week from the 29th March to the 2nd April at the Canberra Tennis Centre. Many elite athletes gathered in Canberra for the tournament which offered a total of $10,000 in prize money. Canberra local and top seed Alison Bai took out the title in the Open Women’s Singles with Chris O’Connell taking out the Open Men’s Singles.

Bai had a convincing win over Brooke Winley in the semifinal taking the match comfortably in two sets 6-2 6-0. In the final Bai was up against the second seed Abbie Myers from Sydney. Myers defeated Canberra’s Kaitlin Staines in a tough semifinal round with Staines going down 6-4 6-4. In the final, Bai lost the first set 4-6 but fought her way back to win the next two sets 6-3 7-5 to take out the title.

In the Open Men’s Draw top seed  Chris O’Connell from Sydney breezed into the semifinal only dropping 3 games. O’Connell then defeated Dimitri Morogiannis 6-1 6-1 to proceed to the final. In the other semifinal, second seed Darren Polkinghorne defeated Chase Ferguson 6-1 6-4. O’Connell proved to be too strong for Polkinghorne in the final by securing the title with a 6-3 6-1 win.

In the Womens Open Doubles, it was Kaitlin Staines and her partner Alexandra Bozovic from Sydney who took the doubles title defeating third seeds Renee McBryde and Brooke Winley 7-5 6-1. Alex Furniss and Arjun Mehrotra took out the Mens Open Doubles Final with a comfortable win over the second seeds Bernard Nkomba and Darren Polkinghorne 6-1 6-3.
