The 2016 ACT Challenge was held last weekend from the 21st April to the 25th April at the Canberra Tennis Centre. The tournament was part of the Bronze JT and White AMT. The tournament was a great success with high quality tennis on display.
Canberra’s Todd Volmari made the semifinal of the AMT mens singles losing in a tough battle to Blazo Djurovic 6-4 6-1. In the other semifinal, Antoni Trajkovski defeated James Murrie in a close encounter 7-5 1-6 7-5. In the final, both men played extremely well with Djurovic taking the win 6-3 6-4.
In the AMT womens singles, locals, Ros Balodis and Sarina Kang were unfortunately defeated in both their semifinals. Ros Balodis was up against the top seed Anne-Marie Medcalf and went down fighting 6-1 6-1. Sarina Kang put on a great battle against the second seed Cayleigh Eddy losing in a close three set match 4-6 6-1 6-3. Medcalf proved to be too strong for Eddy taking the final 6-3 6-1.
In the AMT mens doubles, it was an all Canberra final with Jarred Wynan and Andrew Zedde defeating the fifth seeds Tristan Andrian and Daniel Green 6-2 6-4. In the womens doubles final, number one seeds Francesca Agazzi and Cayleigh Eddy defeated Canberra’s Ros Balodis and her partner Leanne Swaysland in a thrilling final match 7-5 7-5.
Our Canberra juniors also displayed excellent results throughout the tournament. In the 12 & u boys singles, Charlie Camus was runner up while Lejla Hajdar took out the 12 & u girls singles defeating fellow Canberra local Chloe Koundouris. Ashleigh Simes made the final in the 14 & u girls singles and Martina Ujdur won the 16 & u girls singles.
In the 12 & u boys doubles, Charlie Camus and Dominic Ferraris made the final however just fell short of the win. Jimmy Fu and Daniel Zhang took out the 14 & u boys doubles defeating the number four seeds. It was local girl Ellie Koundouris and her partner Sarah Rokusk who defeated fellow local Taegan White and her partner Sophie Mcdonad in the 12 & u girls doubles. In the 14 & u girls doubles, Ashleigh Simes and Monique Hogg defeated Canberra pair Camilla Felix- Vonarx and Alyssa Simoncini.
