12 May 2016 | Tennis ACT

Tennis is a wonderful sport – a game that can be played at all ages, brings people together, is great for fitness, can be played at both a competitive and social level and is fantastic to watch your favourite players live or on tv.

Have you ever thought of ways you could get more involved in the game you love?

Tennis officiating is a fantastic way to learn more about tennis, to be involved both on and off court in the sport and to give back to tennis within the ACT.

Anyone can be a tennis official – you just need to have an interest in the game. To become an official we expect people to complete an introductory course (that is free) and an initial assessment. Once this is complete you are invited to sign up as a member of the Tennis Australia Officiating Team. This requires an up to date eye test, an ACT Government endorsed Working with Vulnerable People Check (free for volunteers) and a membership payment of $80 for two years.

As a Tennis Australia Officials Member you will receive a uniform (shirt, jacket, hat, cap and water bottle) and access to tournament applications in the ACT and broader region of NSW, access to training and development courses and payment for your time worked.

As international tennis returns to Canberra with the redevelopment of the Canberra Tennis Centre, there are many opportunities for officials to be involved on court (line and chair umpire) and off court (court supervisor and referees). Your officiating journey is up to you and is tailored to your needs and wants.

So if you would like to be part of the action with world class tennis now finding a home in Canberra – come and be a part of the officiating team!

To find out how to become a Line Umpire, you are invited to attend our free Line Umpires course on Saturday 9 July from 1-330pm at the Canberra Tennis Centre, Riggall St Lyneham. This will be followed up by an on court session on Sunday 17 July 9.00am-12pm at the ACT Indoors Fast4 Tournament, Canberra Tennis Centre, Riggall St Lyneham.

To find out more about Court Supervising – an off court role which assists in ensuring play on a number of courts are running smoothly and to offer support and education to players on rules and the etiquette of tennis. This is suited to people who love tennis, interested in the rules of the game and like communicating with a range of people. If this sounds like you, you are invited to attend our free Court Supervisors course on Friday 24 June 630-930pm at the Canberra Tennis Centre, Riggall St Lyneham. This will be followed up by a practical session on Saturday 25 June 9am-2pm at the Canberra Tennis Centre Junior Open, Canberra Tennis Centre, Riggall St Lyneham.
