The top four seeds in qualifying have progressed into the main draw of the Apis Canberra International, including global talents world No. 99 Yoshihito Nishioka (JPN) and Germany’s Daniel Masur, alongside Australians Steven De Waard (QLD) and Greg Jones (NSW).
Despite a 15-minute rain delay and blustery conditions, there were some long rallies in Jones’s exciting match against eighth seed, Nathan Pasha (USA). The match went to three sets and a tiebreak, before Jones defeated Pasha 3-6, 6-4, 7-6.
“It was of a high standard, it was a little bit tricky with the wind as well, so it’s just one of those days you’ve got to try and survive,” Jones said.
“I like making it hard for myself, so that was another week of me doing that but I’m happy to win.”
World No.99 Yoshihito Nishioka from Japan breezed through his final qualifying match in straight sets against South Australia’s Nathan Eshmade.
Women’s qualifying began today with three of the sixteen matches unable to be completed due to late rain. Several Australian’s progressed, including upset of the day, Gabriella Da Silva Fick (AUS) who fought hard in a lengthy women’s match against third seed in qualifying, Maddison Inglis (AUS) 6-7, 3-6 -11 in one hour and 49 minutes.
Da Silva Fick wasn’t the only wildcard to cause an upset. Monique Adamczac (AUS) defeated the second seed in qualifying, Naiktha Bains (AUS), in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2 despite bad weather interruptions.
The top seed in the women’s draw also it made through to the final round of qualifying, Italian Georgia Brescia [1] winning comfortably 6-0, 6-3 against Australian, Mary-Ann Liu (VIC).
First round of men’s main draw starts tomorrow. The day is set to highlight three all-Australian singles matches on Centre Court, including qualifyer Steven De Waard (QLD) taking on wildcard player Thomas Fancutt (QLD). Seventh seed Matthew Barton (NSW) [7] will play wildcard Daniel Nolan (VIC) and Chistopher O’Connell (VIC) will compete against Omar Jasika (VIC) in the afternoon. Doubles will be played from 10am on Court 5.

The Apis Canberra International is held at the Canberra Tennis Centre in Lyneham from 29 October to 6 November.
