Lyneham ACT 2602, Australia, 6 March 2017 | Tennis ACT

A strong field has been announced for ACT Claycourt International event #1, including local tennis player James Frawley, aiming to win his way into the main draw through the qualifying round this weekend on home soil.

The world No.1037 has had a stunning start to 2017, with a number of world-class qualifying round wins to earn entry into the Canberra and Tasmanian Challenger events. Currently set to play in the main draw at the Mildura Grand Tennis International this week, Frawley has gained 10 ranking points in 2017, moving him close to entering the top 1,000 from 1,930 at the start of this year.

World No.224 Jordi Samper-Montana (ESP) will headline the field, along with Aussie Blake Mott (VIC) and Evan King (USA). After reaching a career high ranking in 2016 of world No.179, Samper-Montana has had a busy year, highlighted by a Futures title in France, on clay. The 26-year-old was a finalist in Africa, and also in Slovakia and Spain on clay.

Leading the Australian contingent, Mott is in good form after a recent final appearance in Burnie, Tasmania. Member of the 2012 Australian Junior Davis Cup team, the unassuming 20-year-old was recently a finalist in Cairns and Toowoomba and was winner of the Launceston Challenger in 2016.

Also set to play in Mildura this week, 24-year-old King is enjoying a career best world ranking, with three singles titles in 2016 and a recent quarter final singles appearance in Indonesia.

ACT Claycourt International Tournament Director Lenka Greenhalgh said the team is looking forward to hosting two professional events again on our world-class clay courts in Lyneham.

” It’s fantastic to host back-to-back Pro Tour events on our high-quality European clay courts right here in Canberra, she said. “We have attracted a quality male field to Canberra this year, and as such look forward to some great tennis matches over the next two weeks”.
