The ACT Midweek Ladies tennis group has exceeded all expectations at their annual charity day, raising $2,332 for local charity and service provider, HOME – $600 more than last year’s event.

The money raised from the day will go directly towards HOME, an organisation that provides 24-hour support to locals who are suffering with various forms of mental illnesses whom are in need of accommodation within the region.

HOME staff member Sue English was surprised of the amount of support and the additional money raised from the event.

“HOME does not get any government grants, we only rely donations,” she said.

Money raised will go towards assisting HOME with the services they provide.

“If people do move back into the general community then they need to take responsibility to pay rent, pay for their groceries and other expenses.  So it’s very much about enabling people who have a medical illness to take responsibility for these things.”

Beginning in October 1996, the Midweek Ladies charity tournament has been delivered in support of various local charities for the past 21 years. Past recipients have included Alzheimer’s Australia ACT and Marymead ACT.

The event has come a long way from initially raising a cheque for $370 plus a small hamper.

In 2017, more than 60 tennis community participants enjoyed the round robin tournament held at the Belconnen and Melba Tennis clubs with a suite of raffle prizes on offer.

President of the Midweek Ladies Committee, Helen Greenup gave thanks to the committee and all the people involved in organising the event.

“This is a key event in the Midweek Ladies calendar and we are all so proud of what we achieve with the local tennis community behind us each year,” she said.

With money raised from registrations, raffle tickets and donations, lunch for all supporters along with prizes for the players was graciously received.
