ACT tennis seniors player Narelle Raftery was a standout performer at the 47th annual ACT Seniors Championships held in April, taking all three titles in the 55’s age category – singles, doubles and mixed.
Raftery faced Wanda Howes in the 55’s singles final, taking the match in straight sets 6-2, 6-1.
“It was a really great competition, great weather and I found out I liked playing on clay courts, who knew,” she said.
“There was a high level of competition, winning the singles was a great achievement and I really enjoyed winning the mixed with my long term partner Martin Warwick from Victoria.”
Raftery went onto explain how she is focusing on her goals.
“My main two goals are to win a major title at Worlds and just still being able to get up everyday and stay upright.”
Tennis Seniors ACT successfully hosted the 47th ACT Seniors Tennis Championships at the Canberra Tennis Centre from 14-17 April 2017.
Overall, competition was fierce, with competitors hailing from around Australia, featuring a handful of ACT players.
The 60’s singles draw highlighted Leonie Ainsworth, who won her first major singles title, taking all four round robin matches.
Phil Higgs and Pat Moloney came back after a 65’s tie final loss to take an impressive win in the 70’s round robin.
174 players participated across the long weekend, an increase in competitors.
Tournament Director Pat Maloney said the event was well received.
“It’s fantastic to see an increase in competitors for our ACT tournament,” he said.
“We had some good tennis on show this year and a strong local presence”.
The ITF Grade 2 category tournament was the last competition prior to Australian selection for the World Seniors and Super-Seniors Championships.
