Together with two local partner primary schools, Harrison School and Ngunnawal Primary, Tennis ACT hosted a NAIDOC Celebration event on Thursday 29 June 2017.
NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students from both schools participated in on court activities with ANZ Tennis Hot Shots deliverer, Robert Jamieson.
Harrison school teacher David Ferguson was pleased with the physical and social outcomes achieved on the day. “The session was really positive and professionally run. It was great to see the kids engaged and having a go”.
“What was good about today was bringing the two schools together and the enjoyment tennis brings to the children. The social aspect of getting the children to talk and interact was great to see” Ferguson added.
This was the first year the event was held, with future plans to expand the event in 2018. Any interested schools can contact Tennis ACT School Development Coordinator, Geoff Bartlett [email protected].
