Anne-Marie Medcalf (NSW) and Edward Bourchier (TAS) have taken out the AMT singles titles at the Tennis World Canberra Capital Open. Almost 120 participants from across Australia, participated in the event held at the Canberra Tennis Centre from September 8-10.
In the AMT women’s singles, Medcalf lived up to her top seed status, winning the tournament without dropping a set. In the semifinals she defeated Canberra’s Ashleigh Simes, 6-0, 6-3. On the other side of the draw, Canberra’s Annerly Poulos was narrowly defeated in a tight three set battle by Renee McBryde (NSW). In the final, Medcalf proved too strong, defeating McBryde 6-4, 6-2.
After surviving a three set battle against Jack Swindells (NSW) in the second round, Bourchier’s went from strength to strength in the AMT Men’s singles. The semifinals saw the third seed prevail over second seed Oliver Casey in a tight battle 6-4, 7-6(2). In the other semifinal, Canberra’s Jamieson Nathan was beaten by unseeded Josh Kaplan. Bourchier was dominate against Kaplan in the final, dropping just two games on his way to the title.
In the AMT Women’s doubles, Medcalf and McBryde combined to defeat Sarina Kang (ACT) and Cayleigh Eddy (NSW), while in the Men’s doubles Taiyo Harada (JPN)and Ashley Lauweriks (NSW) defeating Robert Howe (ACT) and Paul Howe (NSW).
