Local hope James Frawley won his opening round in qualifying at the Apis Canberra International before falling to fourth seed and former top 200 player Matthew Barton in the second round.

Frawley kicked off proceedings on day 1 at the Canberra Tennis Centre, against Victoria’s Matthew Dellavedova.  Frawley took the first set comfortably 6-2, before Dellavedova fought back to take the second by the same scoreline.  Frawley showed his experience in the third set, edging out the 17 year old 6-4 to move into the second round to face Barton.

Barton raced through the first set, taking it 6-1, before Frawley bounced back to take the second 6-3.  Frawley looked to be building on his momentum when he broke early in the third set.  The match swung back in Barton’s favour, with the former world number 183, fighting back to secure the victory 6-3 in the third set.

In other qualifying matches, Michael Look (QLD) proved too strong for ACT’s Dimitri Morogiannis in the opening round before going on to upset third seed Wishaya Trongcharoenchaikul (THA) 7-6(7) 3-6 6-1.  Look will face Dane Propoggia (NSW) for a spot in the main draw

2015 Canberra International champion Ben Mitchell dominated his two matches, dropping only 3 games on his way to the final round of qualifying where he will face Barton.

Second seed Christopher O’Connell (NSW) will take on Gavin Van Peperzeel (QLD), while Edward Bourchier (TAS) will face Calum Puttergill (QLD).

The final round of men’s qualifying will take place tomorrow, while first round women’s qualifying will start from 10am.  Entry to the Canberra Tennis Centre is free.
