National Academy player Lisa Mays will lead Canberra’s charge in the women’s qualifying for the Apis Canberra International 2017, which starts on Sunday.  Mays will be vying to win three rounds in qualifying in order to make it through to the main draw of the USD$60,000 ITF event.

The 17-year-old, who has relocated to train with Todd Larkham at the National Academy Canberra, said she is looking forward to playing at the Canberra Tennis Centre this weekend.

“I can’t wait to get on court and hopefully win a few rounds,” May said. “I’m training hard and progressing my game, I think it’s doing well.”

Mays, who will play Kelsey Lewis (NSW) in the opening round of qualifying, said she is relishing her time training in Canberra.

“I loved it from day one. I love the facilities, the training, Todd, everything about it.”

14-year-old rising star Annerly Poulos (ACT) and National Academy Canberra athlete Kaitlin Staines will also compete in qualifying.

Poulos, who represented Australia at the world junior tennis titles in the Czech Republic in August, will play Anne-Marie Medcalf (NSW), while Staines meets Tiana Windbuchler (QLD).

World number 223 Priscilla Hon (QLD) is the top seed in qualifying followed by Ramu Ueda (JPN) and Ellen Allgurin (SWE).

The final round of men’s qualifying will also take place on Sunday.
