Peter Breugelmans was appointed life membership to Tennis ACT at the Tennis ACT AGM in December acknowledging his contributions to the Canberra tennis community over the past 40 years at Club, Association, and Seniors level.

In 1970 Peter was one of only 22 Nominated (Subscription) Foundation Life Members of the new National Tennis and Squash Centre at Lyneham.

Peter has been part of Turner Tennis Club volunteer committee since the 1970s. Club Treasurer since 1977, diligence would be the word used to describe his  level of dedication in up keeping their clubs finances so that they can continue to remain operational. He has also led the clubs grading committee, maintenance committee, been their membership contact and association representative.

Apart from some stellar accounting skills, Peter has been the backbone of maintaining his clubs facilities for many years – from local government liaison, club representation at forums, collecting hire fees and up keeping booking schedules, to ordering, hauling and spreading sand on courts, painting, weeding, tree trimming, fixing toilets, lawn mowing, turning up and overseeing tradies to repair court lights, or fixing nets. He goes above and beyond for their club.

In 1978 Peter, having been the Turner representative was appointed to the then ACTLTA Council; serving as Assistant Treasurer and subsequently Treasurer until 1989. He also served on a number of Association sub-committees as the organisation went through significant constitutional change.

In 1998 at the 75th Anniversary dinner of Tennis ACT Peter was one of only five nominees for the award of “Outstanding Contribution to a Club” over the life of the Association.

A keen tennis player, Peter has played tennis since he was a youngster and subsequently has represented his club in many seasons of pennant. He has played in the Australian seniors’ teams’ event since 1981 and participates in the Twilight competition. Since 1996, he has been Treasurer of Tennis Seniors ACT where he has overseen the financial budget for two Australian teams and Individuals championships held in Canberra.  Peter has also been the Public Officer of Tennis Seniors Australia since 1998.

Peter won the Henshilwood Award for ACT Veteran Administrator of the year in 2004.  In 2017 he won the ACT Volunteer Achievement Award at the ACT Annual Tennis Awards, his citation in part reading: “this person is a long term, outstanding tennis volunteer, who loves tennis, and expects no reward for their endeavours.
