In the boys event, the team of Dougall Tywhitt, Gen Casarotto, Hugh Taylor and Stellan Lindrud went undefeated in five pool rounds to earn themselves a spot in the final of the Tony Roche Cup.  The final came down to the wire with the result locked at 3 rubbers all, Metro Lightning edged out the ACT team, winning 24 games to 22.

The girls team of Sophie McDonald, Aliyah Dwyer, Marqaylar Tere, and Isabella Andrews also had a great weekend playing in the Jan O’Neill Cup.   The girls won four out of five pool rounds, only dropping a tight match to Metro Magic by 3 games.  In the playoffs, the team secured third place with a victory over the Metro Stormers.

Tennis Australia Talent Manager ACT / SE NSW, Alun Jones was pleased with the performance from the Canberra youngsters.

“This is the strongest combined result the ACT has had at this event for quite a few years.

“ It was a well deserved result as I have witnessed the hard work each player has dedicated to improving their game over the past 2 months.”

Jones also highlighted the important role the on court managers played in the teams performance over the weekend.

A big thank you to local coaches Andrew Zedde and Belen Barcenilla for taking the teams away and passing on their knowledge to these young players.”
