Athlete Development Update – June
The past month has seen ACT’s three professional players, Nick Kyrgios, Alison Bai and James Frawley all win doubles titles throughout the world.
Kyrgios, teamed with American Jack Sock to win his first ever ATP doubles title at the ATP 250 Lyon Open. The unseeded pairing cruised through the draw, making it through to the final without dropping a set. In the final the pair won a tight first set against Roman Jebavy and Matwe Middelkoop before dropping the second. Down championships point at 8-9 in the super tiebreak, Kyrgios and Sock rattled of three straight points to win the title.
ACT’s leading female player Alison Bai, won the doubles title with her partner Aleksandrina Naydenova of Bulgaria at the ITF $60,000 event in Baytou, China. Alison then went on to reach the final of the ITF $25,000 event in Luszou, China the following week and has hit a career high doubles ranking of 178 in the world. With little ranking points to defend, Alison is trying to make a push towards the top 100 doubles rankings so she can secure a doubles position in the Grand Slams.
James Frawley rounded out the trio of titles, claiming victory at the $15,000 Singapore futures event with fellow Australian Jeremy Beale. The win marked Frawley’s maiden pro tour doubles title.
Canberra’s elite junior players have completed a training block, with most preparing for upcoming events on the June long weekend.
