Telopea Park School have claimed the Todd Woodbridge Cup ACT State Final held at the Canberra Tennis Centre on Friday.

Telopea Park beat out seven other schools from across the capital, edging out Canberra Grammar School in the final by six rubbers to two.

The competition which is open to Year 3 and 4 students is played on smaller modified courts suitable for red modified balls.  The competition is designed to encourage grass-roots tennis participation in schools and encourage a healthy and active lifestyle among children.

Telopea Park School PE Coordinator, Cathy Marot, was pleased with how the schools two teams performed on the day.

“Today went very well, we had two teams.  It’s really strange because at the beginning of year we were struggling to get enough kids for one team and in the end we had too many kids for two teams.

“It’s a good problem to solve, to have too many kids wanting to play.  They did very well, one team won and the other team played the semifinal.”

Cathy said the school has developed a great relationship with their local coach, Robbie Manzano which has helped increase interest at the school.

“Robbie has been a very good support.  We have created the walk to tennis program on Wednesday and Friday.  He has given his time on Friday lunch time as well to help the kids practicing.  A lot of kids have enrolled to the different venues where he is coaching.”

Telopea Park will now progress to the Todd Woodbridge Cup final to compete against the best teams from across NSW at Sydney Olympic Park on Monday 19 November.
