It’s been a month of outstanding performances from ACT players, highlighted by a number of great results on the global stage.
Nick Kyrgios returned to form, capturing the ATP 500 Mexican Open in Acapulco. Nick had an amazing week and defeated some great players including Andreas Seppi, Grand Slam champions Rafael Nadal and Stan Wawrinka and top ten players John Isner and Alexander Zverev. Congratulations to Nick on capturing his 5th career title.
Meanwhile Canberra’s Annerly Poulos, who is now based at the Melbourne National Academy, had a fantastic week at the Grade 1 ITF junior event in Thailand. Annerly reached the semifinals of the singles and won the doubles, propelling her ITF world junior ranking to No.52. Annerly, 16, is the highest ranked Australian junior female player on the ITF rankings, and is now well positioned to play in the main draw of the French, Wimbledon and US Open junior events in 2019.
Over in the USA, former National Academy scholarship holders Kaitlin Staines and Tallulah Farrow have posted some classy wins for their US College Division 1 teams. Kaitlin, 19, has gone undefeated in doubles throughout the 2019 season with her partner Sadie Hammond, and on the weekend they beat the No.3 ranked team in the country to help their team the University of Tennessee Lady Vols to a victory over Lousiana State Uinversity who are ranked 15 in America. Kaitlin and Sadie and now the 8th ranked doubles team in the country and rising, which includes over 200 Division 1 college teams. Meanwhile Tallulah, who plays for the Colorado Buffs at the University of Colorado in Boulder, has been an important part of the team and has posted a 7-7 win-loss record in her first season of US College Tennis. Her team sits mid table in their conference, half way through the season.
