Olivia Rogowska (Vic) has won the ACT Claycourt International #2 with a 7-6(6) 6-3 victory over top seed and world No.136 Priscilla Hon (Qld).
The victory is Rogowska’s 13th USD$25,000 ITF World Tennis Tour title, and 16th title overall.
It was Hon who came out of the blocks firing, breaking early to go out to a 3-1 lead before Rogowska rattled off the next four games to go out to a 5-3 lead. However, Hon fought back to take the first set to a tiebreak.
The tiebreak stayed on serve, before Hon held a set point at 6-5 with Rogowska rattling off the next three points to clinch the tiebreak 8-6.
There were multiple breaks of serve in the second set, before Rogowska held her nerve to close out the match 6-3.
The Victorian was thrilled to win the title and with her form over the fortnight which also saw her reach the semifinals in week one.
“I am really happy with how the past two weeks have gone, my goal was to be as extremely professional with my routines and be as tough as possible and try get as many matches under my belt as possible. I did that and executed it, and it turned out to be a great couple of weeks.”
Canberra has been a happy hunting ground for the Victorian, who now boasts a 17-2 record from her past four tournaments in the capital.
“I love coming back to Canberra. I used to train at the AIS so I have good memories when I was here as a teenager, and I just love it. I have a great Air B n B that I love to come too every single year, so it feels like a second home. These weeks are awesome and hopefully I will be back,” Rogowska added.
Rogowska will now head to the USA for a series of clay court events.
On Saturday, Canberra’s Alison Bai combined with Jaimee Fourlis (Vic) to win the doubles title at the ACT Claycourt International #2.
It was the first time the team had paired up together, with it extra special for Bai to win the title in her home town.
“Definitely, it’s always good. I always feel bad every time I lose, because I try to do Canberra proud, so I’m glad I finally got one title in.”
“It’s great to showcase Canberra, our great facilities at Next Gen and definitely with the three different surfaces, I’m very lucky in Canberra, so hopefully it helps the community play more tennis.”
The pairing dominated the match against top seeds and last week’s champions Naiktha Bains (Qld) and Tereza Mihalikova (SVK) , winning 6-2 6-2.
