The first female only coaching course was held on Sunday 31 March at the Canberra Tennis Centre.  Nine women participated in the Foundation Coaching Course, was was held on finals day of the ACT Claycourt International #2, the culmination of two weeks of tennis highlighting female participation in sport.

ACT Claycourt International #2 doubles champion, Alison Bai, along with Tennis Australian Performance Coach, Louise Pleming, dropped into the course with Pleming advising the participants “they were more valuable than they realise”.

Participants learned how to assist in conducting safe Blue and Red stage ANZ Tennis Hot Shots, awareness of contemporary coaching methodology, along with awareness of the Tennis Australia national policies and the Coaches Code of Conduct.

Kathy Fahim, Coach Education Coordinator NSW/ACT was pleased with how the course went.

“It was a great opportunity to facilitate this Foundation coaching course with the 9 female coaches in attendance. Taking the first step in their coaching journey is a great start and we are looking to build the coaching workforce in the ACT, especially to improve the number of qualified female coaches”.

Despite 58% of trainee coaches in the ACT being female, only 11% of qualified coaches are female.  Tennis ACT made the decision to fully subsidise the Foundation coaching course for females in the ACT to provide an environment supporting women in tennis coaching for the first step on their coaching journey.

The next step for participants will be a Community coaching course which is being organised for the second half of 2019.  If you are interested in finding out more, please contact Kathy Fahim, Coach Education Coordinator NSW/ACT on [email protected].
