Team ACT has competed against Australia’s best at the 2019 School Sport Australia Championships (Pizzey Cup) held in Adelaide from 4-11 May.
With half the team competing for the first time it was a surprise the level was quite high, however with time the team pulled together supported each other through some tough matches led by captains Oliver Sheehan and Ashleigh Simes.
The team was dealt a tough blow on day 3 of the event when the girl’s No.1 player, Ashleigh Simes, broke her collarbone, ruling her out for the remainder of the championships. However Ash toughed through the pain to continue her captains duties and cheers the team on.
While the team didn’t come away with a win, the highlight of the week was a hard fought battle with Tasmania, in which the team eventually fell 10-8 with four of the singles matches decided by a third set tiebreak.
Within the teams events, there were some outstanding indvidiual results for Leon Hemmings, Ellie Koundouris, and Alyssa Simoncini with some excellent wins against higher states.
Congratulations to the participating players and thank you to Carmel Dinn (Manager) and Reza Tompsett (Coach) for a great week.
