Significant upgrades are set to commence at the Canberra Tennis Centre on Saturday 30 November in preparation for the new major event – the Apis Canberra International in January 2020.
GreenSet Worldwide, Tennis Australia’s official court surface supplier, will begin resurfacing the nine outdoor acrylic hard courts and four indoor acrylic hard courts on Saturday. It will provide players competing in Canberra vital preparation for Australian Open 2020, with GreenSet Worldwide completing works at all major events across the Australian Summer of Tennis.
The works will result in an additional court being created with the ANZ Tennis Hot Shots Courts set to be converted to a full sized practice court. New ANZ Tennis Hot Shots courts are scheduled to be built on the western side of the pavilion in early 2020.
In mid-December, LED lighting upgrades will commence on centre court, three additional outdoor courts and the four indoor courts. The lighting upgrades will be a huge win for spectators, with three night sessions planned for the event in January on Monday, Tuesday and Friday. Upgrading the indoor court lighting also provides the flexibility to host the matches indoors in case of bad weather.
In addition to these exciting works a new Northern grandstand is set to be constructed for the January event. This will provide prime viewing and the best seat in the house for fans to watch the superstars of the sport. It increases the capacity of the new event and means more people will be able to get close to the action. Previous events have seen absolute bumper crowds and centre court has been at capacity on finals day with standing room only.
Apis Canberra International Tournament Director and Tennis ACT CEO, Kim Kachel, is looking forward to seeing the site transform in preparation for the event.
“We have always had such positive feedback from players around the world class facilities we have here in Canberra and these upgrades are going to take it to the next level.
“The upgrades, in particular the lighting are going to provide us with more flexibility around the scheduling of matches throughout the tournament. We are excited to deliver the second stage of the redevelopment of the Canberra Tennis Centre in time for our bolstered event in January.
“The upgrades will be a great result for fans too with increased capacity and seating options. We are sure they will love the night session matches and the extra seating available in the Northern grandstand”
The Apis Canberra International will take place from 6-12 January 2020 with a men’s ATP Challenger 125 and women’s USD$25,000 ITF World Tennis Tour event. Tickets to all sessions are now on sale here.
