The museum was a hive of activity during January with the Apia International beginning on the 8th and the museum’s new exhibition “The Hopman Era: Australia on the Rise” opening for the public.
Every year the museum welcomes around 3000 visitors to the museum during the Apia tournament. Visitors always enjoy seeing the new exhibition in air-conditioned comfort (the museum is the only air-conditioned building open to the public during the Apia), perusing the museum shop for mementos and gifts, and playing tennis on the Nintendo Wii. The museum’s patron Ken Rosewall is also out and about most days signing autographs for fans and chatting to museum visitors.
The Australian Tennis Museum always tries to make the museum an exciting place for kids to visit during the Apia. The ‘Find a Ball’ game this year sent kids searching the museum for a specific number of golden tennis balls for a prize and ‘The Great Museum Tennis Hunt’ challenged kids to answer questions hidden through the museum for the chance to be registered as a Tennis Detective with the Australian Tennis Museum.
Congratulations to Victoria Azarenka and Jarkko Nieminen who took home the Apia International Singles titles. The museum staff and volunteers all had a fantastic time this year and are looking forward to seeing everyone at the Apia International in 2013!
