Standing 66cms tall, the Mars Buckley Memorial trophy is an impressive sight. It is engraved with the winners of the Lawn Tennis Challenge played between Victoria and New South Wales from 1906 to 1960. New South Wales captured the trophy 34 times with Victoria only winning 7 ties, probably to the great disgruntlement of the sons of Mars Buckley who donated the trophy for the event and were proud Victorians. During this period, the tournament had to be cancelled 13 times due to World Wars or inclement weather.
This trophy has been in the Australian Tennis Museum’s collection since the early 1990’s and was displayed in the first exhibition held at Sydney Olympic Park when the museum moved from White City in 2005.
