Flavia Pennetta easily beat American teenager Coco Vandeweghe 6-1 6-2 to hand Italy a second straight Fed Cup title and third in four years.
In the first set Pennetta hammered eight winners and made just 11 unforced errors to the 18-year old Vandeweghe’s 27 unforced errors as the American’s inexperience was evident from the outset.
Pennetta ran away with the match in the second set to silence the pro-American crowd at the San Diego Sports Arena.
The win gave Italy an unassailable 3-1 lead in the match following victories for Pennetta and reigning French Open champion Francesca Schiavone in Saturday’s day one of the best-of-five, two-day final.
