Ashleigh Barty (Qld) and Andrew Whittington (Vic), both members of the AIS Pro Tour program, won top honours at the ITF Grade 1 Sarawak Chief Minister’s Cup in Malaysia today.
Unseeded Ashleigh Barty continued her excellent form, claiming the title with a 6-3 7-5 win over Canadian Carol Zhao and dropping just one set during the entire 18/u event.
This is the fourth international junior title, and first Grade 1 title, for 14-year-old Barty, following on from some excellent results on the Pro Tour last month where she reached the quarterfinals in Mildura and the third round in Sydney. Barty is currently ranked 622 in WTA rankings and is the highest ranked 14-year-old girl in the world.
Second seed Andrew Whittington was runner-up to fellow Aussie James Duckworth at this event last year, and today took the extra step to claim the title with a win over top seed Jesen Patrombon from the Philippines.
Australia also won both doubles titles.
Ashleigh Barty teamed with Abbie Myers (NSW) to win over Anna Danilina (KAZ) and Yuliya Lysa (UKR) 7-5 6-2, and Australian Open Junior Championships finalist and AIS Pro Tour program member Luke Saville (SA) paired with New South Wales’ Joey Swaysland to lift the boys’ trophy with a 6-4 6-3 win over No.6 seeds Patrombon (PHI) and Jaden Grinter (NZL).
