Victorian wheelchair player Sarah Calati, 25, has broken into the world’s top 100 after an impressive performance at the Chilean Open on 12-15 April 2012.
In the second round, Calati defeated World No. 27 Francisca Mardones of Chile 5-7 6-3 6-4, which saw her ranking jump to No.86 in the world.
“This is the first time I have been in the top 100,” an excited Calati said.
“Mardones was the second seed in the tournament and I defeated her – I am so happy.”
In her quarterfinal meeting with fellow Australian, Janel Manns (NSW), Manns was too strong for the young Victorian, clinching a 6-4 6-2 win.
In the doubles competition, Calati paired with Colombian Johana Sossa to reach the semifinals before losing 6-1 6-3 to Isabel-Margarita Aguirre (CHI) and Elena Jacinto (ESP).
