1960–1965 Roy Emerson features in six consecutive winning doubles duos

Few Australians can lay claim to creating records at Roland Garros, but Roy Emerson can.

From 1960 to 1965 the supremely fit serve and volleyer from the small town of Blackbutt in Queensland made the men’s doubles title at the Paris championships his own.

Emmo took the title for six consecutive years with, amazingly, five different partners – Neale Fraser (twice), Rod Laver, Ken Fletcher, Fred Stolle and Manuel Santana – proving just how adaptable and talented a player he was.

But that wasn’t the only record that Emerson holds. He remains the only male player to have completed a career Grand Slam in both singles and doubles and his 28 Grand Slam titles (12 singles and 16 doubles) remains a record.

His 12 singles titles (from 15 finals) puts him in third place on the all-time list behind Pete Sampras (14) and Roger Federer (16).

Emerson came close to pulling off a calendar year Grand Slam in 1964 but lucked out at the French Open when he fell in the quarterfinals. That year he won 55 consecutive matches and racked up 109 victories from 115 outings.
