Following her early exit this week at the China Open in Beijing, Sam Stosur can no longer qualify for the WTA Championships in Istanbul.
The WTA today announced that three more players – Petra Kvitova, Angelique Kerber and Sara Errani – had confirmed their place in the season-ending event, with the eighth and final spot to be taken by either Li Na or Marion Bartoli.
Victoria Azarenka, Maria Sharapova, Serena Williams and Agnieszka Radwanska had earlier qualified for the $4.9 million tournament.
Even if Stosur was to win the next two events she has entered, at Osaka and Moscow, the points she would accrue would not be enough to catch Li, who sits one place ahead of her at eighth in the WTA Race to the Championships and whose run to the quarterfinals at the China Open kept Stosur at bay.
