Matthew Ebden became the third Australian through to the second round of the San Jose ATP Open in California on Wednesday, downing Rik De Voest 6-2 7-5.

Ebden beat the world No.338 South African in straight sets, one day after compatriots Marinko Matosevic and Lleyton Hewitt posted wins.

Ebden next meets Belgian veteran Xavier Malisse, while Hewitt and Matosevic have to face American Sam Querrey and Columbia’s Alejandro Falla respectively.

Falla took two-and-a-half hours on Wednesday to overcome Italian Flavio Cipolla 7-6(1) 7-6(10).

In Wednesday’s doubles match, Hewitt and Matosevic needed a super tiebreak-deciding set to trump Philipp Marx and Florin Mergea 1-6 7-6(5) [10-2].
